HYDRATING NEWBORNS’ SKIN

One of the very first things parents-to-be need to learn is how to take care of a newborn’s skin.

Babies’ skin has its own needs and features and it is therefore essential to treat it with the appropriate methods and products.

But which features make babies’ skin so peculiar?

BABIES’ SKIN

One of the things that melts new mothers’ hearts the most is the soft and delicate skin typical of newborns. However, these features shouldn’t be underestimated and should be taken into consideration in the choices regarding cleansing and hydration of babies’ skin.

First of all, it is important to know that, in the early stages of life, skin is thinner and, consequently, even more delicate: without a protective layer that acts as a barrier, it is exposed to external agents such as irritants or allergens. Moreover, having basic Ph, the skin is vulnerable to fungi and bacteria.

Another peculiarity is the lower production of sebum, due to which the hydrolipidic film is thinner, leading to greater dryness and permeability, typical of baby’s skin.

It is now important to understand how and through which products you can provide the appropriate kind of cleansing and hydration for the newborn.

BATHING AND HYDRATION

One of the primary acts of care in the life of the newborn is that of bathing, an opportunity to play and cuddle as well as a moment of emotional bonding with your baby. For this reason, it is important to create a comfortable environment, in which the baby feels relaxed and safe. First of all, you need to check  the water temperature, which must be between 37°C and 38 ºC. You can use a simple children’s bath thermometer, which will also act as a companion with which the baby can play.

As for the frequency of the bath, you can bathe a newborn 2 or 3 times a week, but remember that it is still necessary to cleanse the skin every day in order to remove saliva residues, stool or other secretions that could cause irritation. For the same reason, it is recommended to use formulations created specifically to meet the needs of children: non-aggressive products, without allergens and/ or fragrances.

Linea MammaBaby®  recommends bathing with the Baby Rice Starch, a 100% pure and natural product, suitable for cleansing newborns. Poured into the water and/ or massaged gently on the skin, it has a calming, emollient and soothing effect and can relieve itching and redness; it is therefore useful for the care of the diaper area too.

It is also essential to dry the skin carefully, avoiding rubbing on the skin and rather dabbing, especially in the diaper area and in all those areas that could remain moist. This will prevent the risk of irritation and redness.

If despite all the precautions taken, the skin still gets irritated, a fundamental ally is the Baby Diaper Change Cream Cosmos Natural: moisturizing, soothing and protective, it absorbs moisture and, thanks to its vegetable oils, nourishes the skin, keeping it supple and soft.

HYDRATION AND CLEANSING AWAY FROM HOME

Skin care isn’t limited to bath time. It is therefore essential to find products that are suitable for babies’ cleansing and hydration, but are also practical to use when you’re not home.

Wet wipes usually are moms’ first ally. Linea MammaBaby® offers the Baby Wipes, 100% biodegradable, enriched with vegetable oils, panthenol, aloe and vitamins A and E, ideal to cleanse gently at any time of the day.

Baby Cleansing Milk No Rinse Cosmos Natural is an additional help: a mild and nourishing cleanser, suitable for sensitive skin of babies and useful for changing diapers in the absence of water and soap.

One last companion for hydration, useful to meet the needs of newborns, is the Baby Face & Body Cream Cosmos Natural, a delicate formulation that nourishes, softens and moisturizes the skin in a completely natural way, thanks to the extracts of organic aloe vera, avocado oil and chamomile.
